Dish Network Management and Echostar ManagementCharles W. Ergen / Charlie ErgenChairman and CEO, FounderBorn in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. March 1, 1953 He received his B.S. from the University of Tennessee, and went on to receive his M.B.A. at the Babcock Graduate School of Management at Wake Forest University in 1976. Ergen went on to start a career with Frito-Lay as a CPA {financial analyst} from 1976 to 1978. Around 1980 Charlie Ergen and Jim DeFranco, both tried their gambling skills at blackjack and poker in Las Vegas. Both Charlie Ergen and Jim DeFranco were ejected from Las Vegas after being accused of counting cards at blackjack; that misfortune actually was very lucky. That led them to sell C-Band satellite out of a truck, Charlie Ergen, Cantey/Candy Ergen and Jim Defranco founded Echosphere, which turned into many other business ventures. The rest is history Dish Network is the second largest DBS provider in the U.S. being ejected from Las Vegas was likely the best thing that could have happened to Charlie Ergen and Jim Defranco, It gave them a real career. James Defranco / Jim DefrancoEVP - Executive Vice President, Sales and Distribution, Co-FounderJim Defranco attended Clarkson College of Technology in Postdam, N.Y., where he studied industrial distribution. Jim Defranco is also on EchoStar's Board of Directors, and has held numerous positions with EchoStar's subsidiaries. Jim Defranco had said if Echostar I, had failed to launch December 1995, "I'd be back selling wine," Luckily for executive vice president Jim Defranco the launch from China was a success, and he doesn't have to count cards or sell wine. Carl VogelPresident and Vice ChairmanAs of September 2006, Carl Vogel once again holds the position of president of EchoStar Communications Corp. a position he held earlier in his career from 1994 - 1997 in which he was a key member in the launch of Dish Network. Carl Vogel grew up in the Chicago suburbs, his family moved to Wisconsin when he was in high school. He then attended St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin where he received a Bachelor of Science degree. After graduation he moved back to Chicago and went to work for Arthur Andersen and Co. which eventually led Vogel to a career in the cable industry. But he also, in his words "Helped create the arch enemy" meaning {DBS} Direct broadcast satellite while working at Echostar / Dish Network the first time around. That quote was made while Carl Vogel was CEO at Charter Communications. It's known Vogel is a huge NASCAR fan, if I were a betting man I'd bet he would have Cable TV as a backup to Dish Network for those rainy days. Rain fade won't stop a good cable man from watching the race.
